An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat version of the carrier-borne F/A-18F in 1:72 scale from the South Korean brand Academy. The model comes on sprues, unassembled and unpainted, and is built in the classic way with cement for plastic. The 1:72 scale is the most widespread one for military aircraft, and the finished model fits even a modest display cabinet.
The F/A-18F is the two-seat variant of the Super Hornet, the thoroughly reworked successor to the original Hornet. Compared with the older machine it has a larger airframe, a revised wing, angular air intakes and more powerful engines, which means greater range and a higher load on the pylons. The rear seat is taken by a weapon systems officer, so the two-seat version is used for tasks demanding work with sensors and fire control. The aircraft serves with the carrier air wings of the US Navy, and as a multirole fighter it handles air combat as well as attacks on ground and surface targets; with a refueling pod it also acts as a carrier-borne tanker for the other aircraft of the wing.
Cut the parts from the sprue with nippers and sand the gate remnants away so that they seat cleanly. It is practical to paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before the fuselage is closed up. Before painting it pays to spray the model with a filling primer, which evens out the surface and reveals any flaws in the joints. The gray scheme of a naval fighter comes alive when you shade the individual panels very slightly and bring out the engraved lines with a flowing wash. Apply the decals onto gloss varnish and, once dry, spray the whole model matte so that their edges do not show.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
