What the accessory is suited to

Boxes and transport containers are among the most useful small things that can be added to a model or to a scene. A vehicle with an empty bed looks like a display piece, whereas a couple of boxes on a fender or stacked against a wall say at once that the vehicle is being worked with. In 1:72 scale such accessories also take up little room while filling empty areas that otherwise look dead.

Where it belongs in a scene

They do most of the work where movement is meant to show: at a supply vehicle, at a weapon position, at a loading ramp or in the corner of a diorama where materiel is being stacked. They also work well for layering heights. A few boxes stood on top of each other break up a flat plan and give a scene depth without having to add another model. They also help to cover a spot that did not come out well, or a joint that stayed visible. In smaller scales it pays to put two or three pieces together and only then seat the whole group; it holds together better and is easier to handle.

Work tips

• Try the arrangement dry and only then fix the parts in place.
• Do not stand the boxes in a row at equal spacing; an irregular arrangement looks more natural.
• The glue suited to the material of the parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting.
• A light dusting will tie the accessory in with the rest of the scene.
