Broken tree trunks in 1:72 scale are a scenic accessory for a diorama: they bring traces of destruction into the terrain that undamaged vegetation cannot offer.

Snapped and shattered trunks belong among the storytelling elements of a scene. A healthy tree says only that a place is overgrown; a broken trunk, on the other hand, carries the information that something came through, whether heavy vehicles, a gale or a hit. The accessory is intended for 1:72 scale, that is, for the world in which most of those interested in aircraft and in smaller scenes with vehicles build.
Most often along roads and cuttings, at the edge of a stand or in a hollow, where it reads more truthfully than a straight row of untouched trees. It also serves well as a divide between foreground and background: a low stump at the front leads the eye into the composition and at the same time can hide a less successful spot on the base. It pays to alternate trunks of different lengths and angles, because stumps of the same height lined up next to one another give away that they came out of one mold.
Bark comes alive only through contrast: a darker base, a thin wash into the cracks and a dry brush in a lighter tone over the edges. The break in the wood tends to be noticeably lighter than the outside of the trunk, so it is worth treating separately. Cover the transition to the base with modeling grass, grit or sifted sand, so that the trunk does not look laid on the surface but set into it.
