About product

The BT-7 model 1937 tank with the P-40 ring mount in 1:72 scale (UM)

The kit captures the Soviet BT-7 fast tank in the form corresponding to 1937, completed by the P-40 ring mount on the turret. The scale is 1:72 and the manufacturer is the Ukrainian brand UM. The package contains injection-molded plastic parts; the model is neither glued nor painted. The ring mount on the turret roof is the most conspicuous distinguishing feature of this variant and markedly changes the silhouette of the finished model.

The real subject

The BT range belonged to the fast tanks derived from the convertible wheel-and-track concept, in which it was possible to run on tracks or, once the tracks were taken off, on wheels. The BT-7 type was its more advanced representative and was built in several forms differing in the shape of the turret, the armament and the fittings. The version of the late 1930s received a conical turret. The ring mount designated P-40 served to carry a machine gun on the turret roof and was fitted to some of the vehicles as additional equipment.

Building and painting tips

The large wheels of this type are dominant on a model, so give them your attention. Glue them and let them set on a flat surface so that they all sit down equally, otherwise the model stands crooked. Assemble the turret and the mount separately and paint them apart, because spraying around the mount is awkward. Cut the thin grab handles and fittings from the sprue only at the part. Glue with a capillary cement for plastic. Apply primer to the model, spray the base shade with an airbrush and lighten the surfaces from the top down, so that the model does not look flat. Finally use a wash in the hatches and rivets and fine pigments on the lower hull and the track runs.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of prewar and early wartime Soviet armored vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who collect the variants of the BT range
  • Anyone interested in the less usual form with the ring mount
  • More experienced modelers who are comfortable working with small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a ring mount on the turret roof that served to carry a machine gun. It was fitted to some of the vehicles as additional equipment and is the main distinguishing feature of this variant.

The version of the late 1930s received a conical turret and a number of detail changes.

In 1:72 scale these are small parts, especially in the running gear and the hull fittings. The number of parts is given in the instructions with the kit.

Paint the turret with the mount apart from the hull, otherwise the turret roof is hard to reach. Use primer, thin coats from an airbrush, and keep the weathering more restrained than in large scales.
