The BTR-4 is a Ukrainian armored personnel carrier on an eight-wheeled chassis, designed as a successor to the older machines of the BTR series. Compared with them it brought a substantial change in layout: the troops dismount at the rear rather than through side doors between the wheels, which is safer for infantry in combat. The version with the letter E is the export model. The vehicle is amphibious, it moves fast on a road and in rough country it is helped by large independently suspended wheels.
The model captures a machine with slat armor, that is with grilles standoff-mounted from the sides of the hull. The grilles are meant to catch an incoming shaped-charge round before it reaches the armor and so to defeat its effect. On the model it is a conspicuous feature that enlarges the outline of the vehicle and creates shadow above the sides. How the grilles are done in the kit and in what order they are fitted is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Assemble the grilles on a flat surface and let them cure thoroughly before you fit them to the hull, otherwise they will warp. In 1:72 scale the parts are small, so tweezers and good light pay off. Direct the spray so that the paint reaches behind the grilles as well, ideally from several directions and in thin coats. Leave the wheels and the underside until the end, when you tone the soiling from the terrain.
