About product

Dead Design 1:72 Buccaneer S.2B - masks for insignia and stencils

A set of masks for the national insignia and the technical stencils of a Buccaneer S.2B model in 1:72 scale. It is not a canopy mask: it goes onto the painted surface of the model and the marking is sprayed through it. The resulting insignia has no carrier film, so it cannot silver or leave a glossy rectangle on a matte finish.

The real subject

The Blackburn Buccaneer was a twin-engine strike aircraft built for penetration at low altitude and high speed. It was originally created for British naval aviation, and its characteristic features included a rotating bomb bay door that carried the ordnance inside the fuselage so as not to add drag. The S.2B version was intended for the Royal Air Force, so the markings it carried were British.

Why spraying is worth the effort on a low-level camouflage

Buccaneers wore dark camouflage with a matte finish, and it is precisely on a matte surface that decals show most: air is trapped under the carrier film and the insignia gets a pale edge. Sprayed markings do not have that problem at all. On top of that they survive weathering and an overspray of final matte varnish without the outline being revealed.

How to work with the masks

The surface underneath must be smooth and fully cured. First the base color of the insignia is sprayed, then the mask is laid on and the top color is sprayed over it. In 1:72 scale the stencils are very small, so have sharp tweezers, a magnifier and plenty of patience ready; spraying dry, at low pressure and with heavily thinned paint is a necessity here, not advice. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has set and pull them along the surface, not straight up.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British strike aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers whose decals silver on matte camouflage
  • Those who weather their models heavily after painting
  • Advanced modelers used to working with very small masks

FAQ

It marks the kit release the set is cut for, not the year of the aircraft. The Buccaneer served considerably longer.

They are not. This set covers the national insignia and the technical stencils; the glazing has a separate masking set.

On matte camouflage air is trapped under the carrier film of a decal and a pale edge appears around the insignia. Sprayed markings do not carry that risk.

With heavily thinned paint, at low pressure and dry, so that it does not get under the edge of the mask. The surface underneath must be smooth and cured.
