About product

Bugatti 100P 1:72 - a Special Hobby kit

An injected plastic kit in 1:72 scale by the Czech maker Special Hobby, whose models tend to be short-run and place somewhat higher demands on the builder than mass-produced ones. The subtitle in the name refers to the French racing aircraft. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are stated on the packaging and in the instructions.

The real subject

The Bugatti 100P was a racing aircraft designed by Louis de Monge for Ettore Bugatti in the second half of the 1930s. Its structure was wooden and aerodynamically exceptionally clean: two engines were housed in the fuselage behind the pilot and drove coaxial contra-rotating propellers in the nose through shafts, the tail surfaces were V-shaped and the landing gear retracted. The aircraft was built with speed competitions in mind, but it never got into the air; the airframe nonetheless survived and is one of the most frequently mentioned aviation curiosities of interwar France.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run mold, expect heavier sprue gates and the fact that the parts may not have locating pins. So try every joint dry first, level the surfaces on sandpaper laid on a flat mat and only then glue. A liquid cement for plastic applied into the joint by capillary action is suitable. Fill the seams on the fuselage, sand them and check them against the light. The smooth cowling with a minimum of panel lines calls for a careful primer, because every imperfection shows under a gloss color. Glue the propeller blades only after painting, fit the clear canopy at the end and glue it with a glue for clear parts.

Who the model is for

  • modelers who enjoy unusual and unrealized designs
  • builders of aircraft in 1:72 scale with experience of short-run molds
  • anyone interested in interwar racing and record aircraft
  • modelers who want to practice a smooth gloss finish

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather for modelers with practice. Short-run molds tend to have heavier sprue gates and a looser fit, so a dry fit and fine-tuning of the joints are needed.

No. The aircraft was built but it never took off. That is precisely why it is a sought-after and unusual subject.

A glue intended for clear parts, which leaves no milky marks once dry. Ordinary cement for plastic would attack the transparent surface.
