A figure set designated as a Chinese regiment and dated to the year 1900. Among the figure sets of this period it is a subject that is used differently in a scene from the European infantry sets: often as the other side of a confrontation, or as a unit set apart by the cut of its dress.
A foot unit in period dress with a hand firearm. The number of figures, the make-up of the poses and the particular look of the dress are stated on the box. In a scene the set fills the role of the opposing side or of a supplementary contingent; its value lies precisely in bringing a visually distinct group into a diorama, one that will not be confused with the other figures on the table.
A face in 1:72 scale is only a few tenths of a millimeter across, so the rule is simple: eyes are not painted. A dot in the eye turns the figure into a startled puppet, and from close up as well as from a distance it works worse than a smooth surface. A procedure that does work: a base flesh tone, then, once dry, a thin brown wash that runs into the eye sockets, under the nose and under the chin, and finally a very fine lightening on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones, either by drybrushing or with a single touch of a lighter tone. The shadow in the eye socket will create the impression of an eye by itself. If the skin looks flat to you once dry, add contrast in the shadow, not in the lightening.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and terrain are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
