About product

1:72 Douglas F4D-1 Skyray canopy airbrush mask - a masking set from MH models

A masking set from MH models for models of the Douglas F4D-1 Skyray carrier fighter in 1:72 scale. The masks are stuck onto the clear cockpit canopy, which is sprayed over with the color of the frames, and the masks are taken off afterwards. The frames come out exactly along the engraved lines and even in width along their whole length. It is not a kit but an accessory to a model.

The real subject

The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray was an American carrier-based jet fighter of the 1950s, built as a delta wing without horizontal tail surfaces. It served with the US Navy and the US Marine Corps in the interceptor role, that is as a machine intended to climb quickly and strike at incoming targets. Characteristic are the broad wing area with a markedly rounded leading edge, the side air intakes at the wing root and the bubble canopy. In the later unification of the designations of American aircraft the type received the new designation F-6.

Use and masking tips

Lift the pieces out of the sheet one at a time with the tip of a scalpel. Offer each one up to the clear glazing and press it into the engraved edges of the frame, so that no air is left under the edge. On a bubble canopy it helps to start at the top of the curve and work toward the edges, so that the mask does not ripple as it is bent. Cover the inside of the cockpit with a damp tissue and the surrounding areas with tape. Spray the shade of the interior of the frames first and the external finish once that is dry, both very thinly - on glossy naval finishes every step on the edge of the mask shows clearly. Take the masks off with tweezers soon after they have dried.

Who the set is for

  • Anyone interested in American aircraft of the 1950s

This is not a model of the aircraft and not a kit. Paints, varnish and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set for the cockpit glazing, and an F4D-1 Skyray model in 1:72 is bought separately.

Start sticking it down at the top of the curve and work toward the edges. The mask then does not ripple as it follows the curvature and the edge seats better into the engraved edge.

On a glossy surface even a small step on the edge of the mask is noticeable. Several thin coats give a smoother transition than one heavy one.

Yes, in the later unification of American aircraft designations the type was redesignated F-6. The set is listed under the original F4D-1 designation.
