The real subject

The Arado Ar 240 was a German twin-engined aircraft from the beginning of the 1940s, designed as a universal machine for reconnaissance as well as for combat. Only a few were built and it never reached service as standard equipment, but that makes it all the more interesting for modelers: it has an unusual fuselage shape, slim engine nacelles and solutions that are not seen on ordinary machines. The exhausts belong among the places where the machine is recognizable at first glance, and at the same time among those where an injection-molded kit runs into the limits of what it can do.

The replacement exhausts have a sharper outline than the parts from the kit and, above all, drilled-out outlets, so they do not look like a blind stub. The number in the name tells the individual renditions within the line apart; which version of the aircraft each suits is given in the maker's instructions. Building and painting tips

Fit the parts dry and only then glue them, because the opening in the kit usually needs adjusting slightly. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so that the outlets stay regular. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, and choose the glue according to the material of the parts. Exhausts are never merely dark: a base in a muted metallic shade, a brownish and rusty tinge in the outlets and a fine light trace of exhaust gases trailing back along the nacelle will do more than the best shape of a part. Glue them on only after the surrounding surfaces have been sprayed.
