A set of stencils for painting the landing gear bays of the F-105D Thunderchief fighter-bomber in 1:72 scale according to the parts of the Hasegawa kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The stencils define the landing gear bays on an F-105D Thunderchief model. The dimensions match the parts from the Hasegawa mold, whose outlines differ noticeably from competing moldings of the same type.
The Thunderchief remains to this day the largest single-seat combat aircraft with a single jet engine ever built in series. Republic designed it for a fast penetration at low altitude with a nuclear bomb in the bomb bay inside the fuselage, but the war in Indochina assigned it an entirely different role. From there the machines flew most of the strike missions over the north and their crews invented the nickname Thud for them. Despite high losses it was an exceptionally tough type and fast near the ground, where it had the advantage over its opponent.
On this type a contrast between a light interior and a dark top finish offers itself, so the edge has to be clean. Lay the inner tone on before the fuselage halves are assembled where that is possible, and deal with the rest with the stencil fitted. A matte clear coat at the close unifies the gloss of the whole underside and the differences in shade are lost.
