About product

The Eduard photo-etched set for the F-14B in 1:72 scale

Photo-etched parts are the simplest way of getting detail into a small scale that injection-molded plastic cannot manage - thin sheets, grilles, panels and small controls in a thickness that matches reality. The set is worked for a model of the F-14B in 1:72 scale and is meant for finishing a plastic kit; that is not in the package, nor are glue and paints. The extent of the set and the list of parts are given by the maker on the packaging, so go through it before the build and compare it with what your kit offers.

The real subject

The Grumman F-14B Tomcat was an American twin-engine carrier-borne fighter aircraft with a crew of two and with a variable-sweep wing. From the original A version it differed in its power unit: in place of the TF30 engines it received the F110 type with greater thrust, which showed in the shaping of the rear part of the fuselage as well. The machine was designed for operation from aircraft carriers, and the sturdy landing gear, the arrestor hook and the folding wing panels match that.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut the photo-etched parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with scissors, because the edge then stays straight. Make the bends over a metal ruler or in a bending tool, always at the marked groove. Degreased sheet is the basis, or the paint will not hold; use a primer for metal. Glue the smaller parts with cyanoacrylate glue laid on with a toothpick, while larger areas can be bedded on a thin layer of glue for metal. Work over a surface that will catch the parts that fly off, because in this scale they are lost very easily.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the F-14B in 1:72 scale.
  • Those who want to raise the detail of the interior and the surface without rebuilding the model.
  • More experienced builders used to working with photo-etched parts.
  • Anyone interested in competition-level work in a small scale.

The set is an accessory to a plastic model, not a kit on its own. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
