An Eduard photo-etched set for a model of the F-14B Tomcat carrier fighter in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-14 Tomcat is a carrier fighter of the US Navy with a crew of two sitting in tandem and with a variable-sweep wing. In flight the wing spreads for slow flight and the approach to the deck, and conversely draws in toward the fuselage for fast flight, which makes the Tomcat one of the most interesting models in terms of shape. The F-14B form differs from the original A version above all in its powerplant. It served with naval squadrons until the type was withdrawn and carries varied, often boldly marked schemes.
Photo-etched parts are made of thin metal sheet, so they have a thickness that matches the scale, which injection-molded plastic will never come close to. Wherever a model is meant to have sheet metal, a grille, a strap or a small control, photo-etched parts replace a disproportionately thick plastic part and the whole build looks finer. In 1:72 scale that difference tells even more than on larger models. Which parts the set contains and which kit it is cut for are given in the instructions enclosed with the set.
The parts are held on the carrier sheet by small tabs. Cut them off with a new sharp blade on a hard surface, not with pliers, which bend the metal. Make the bends in a bender or between two blades, so that the edge is crisp and straight. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, or with a two-part glue, which gives more time to position the part. Before painting, degrease the metal parts and cover them with a base coat intended for metal, otherwise the finish will not hold on the smooth surface. Prepare tiny parts over a tray with raised edges.
The model, paints, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
