A smooth polystyrene sheet 15 x 30 cm and 1.5 mm thick. A structural material for bases, bulkheads, templates and the load-bearing frames of buildings.

Smooth polystyrene with no engraving, in a 15 x 30 cm format and 1.5 mm thick, belongs to the structural materials. It is not a cladding sheet for covering a visible wall but a rigid board from which bulkheads, floors, plinths and load-bearing frames are cut, frames that then carry the finer and thinner parts.
The thickness of the material is too great for ordinary sheet metal: in 1:35 it would correspond to a five centimeter plate and in 1:24 to roughly three and a half centimeters. That is exactly why it suits places where the material is meant to be hidden and above all rigid, that is in a frame rather than on the surface.
At this thickness a single score and snap is no longer enough. Run several deeper passes with a knife along a straight edge and only then break the sheet; a cleaner edge, though, comes from a fine saw followed by leveling with sandpaper laid on glass. A glued joint appreciates the thickness of the material, because the contact area is large and the solvent creates a real weld in it. It can be drilled with ordinary metal bits at low speed so that the edge of the hole does not melt. The sheet can only be bent when heated, and with a risk that the surface will ripple.
It pays to keep the offcuts: strips from a wide board make shims under sloping surfaces, wedges for leveling a plinth and simple little molds for casting small items in resin.
