The F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier-based fighter with a variable-sweep wing that folds back in flight according to speed. The crew is made up of two men sitting one behind the other: the pilot in front, the weapon systems operator at the rear. Version D is the last production rendition of the whole line and differs from the older machines in the instrument fit of the cockpit, which is why cockpit accessories are made for the individual versions separately.
On a model of an aircraft the cockpit is the first place the viewer looks, and on the Tomcat it is in view especially well, because the canopy is large and clear. An injection-molded kit in 1:72 scale usually only hints at the cockpit: the instrument panel is flat, the side consoles coarse and the seats simplified. The replacement set takes those places over with parts of sharper definition, so that even in a small scale depth appears under the canopy. The extent of the particular set is given by the manufacturer's instructions.
The parts are not polystyrene, so cement for plastic does not hold on them; they are bonded with super glue. Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest down flat. Before painting wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and degrease them, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. Assemble and paint the cockpit before you glue the fuselage halves together; after that you cannot get inside any more. Always dry-fit first to see whether the fuselage closes with the new cockpit in it, and take away as much of the plastic the part replaces as needed.
For modelers who are building the F-14D in 1:72 scale and want the cockpit finished under an open canopy as well. The work is fine, so tweezers and a steady hand come in handy. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
