Masks for the national insignia and the technical lettering F-4C/D Phantom II in 1:72 scale from Dead Design make it possible to spray the markings, so the glossy intermediate coat and the decal softener are done away with.
Responsibility details are not available.
Pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the national insignia and the technical lettering. The markings arise by spraying paint through the mask, not by sticking a decal on. A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so it has nothing to silver with and stays in one plane with the finish around it.
The F-4C and F-4D were versions of the Phantom II used by the US Air Force. The airframe is densely covered with small technical lettering, which together with the national insignia makes up a substantial part of the visual impression of a finished model.
A decal has to go onto a smooth glossy surface, otherwise air is closed in under the carrier film and a flat border arises. That is why a glossy intermediate coat is sprayed before decals, then softener is used so that the film is pressed over the engraved lines and the curvature, and finally the whole model is flattened again. With a mask this whole chain is done away with. The paint is applied straight onto flat camouflage, it follows the curvature and the engraved panel lines by itself and has nowhere to create a step. One thing is left: the base has to be completely dried and smooth, so that the paint does not run under the border of the film, and the spraying is done in several thin coats.
