Stencils for spraying the national insignia and the small technical lettering on a model of the Vought F-8 Crusader (1:72). Developed for the Hasegawa, Academy and Italeri kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
This sheet does not deal with the cockpit but with the national insignia and the small lettering on the skin. Sprayed markings differ from decal ones in that they lie directly in the paint: they have no thickness of their own, create no unsightly rim around themselves and there is no risk of their lifting on a rivet or on the edge of a panel once dry. The target kits are Hasegawa, Academy and Italeri.
For most of their career naval Crusaders wore a light gray upper surface and a white underside of the airframe. On such a base the stars in a circle with side bars stood out, as did the squadron code on the vertical tail and a row of warning notices around the air intake, the cannon barrels and the extraction openings. Later machines moved to an unobtrusive gray scheme, where the insignia are apparent only close up and a modeler has to shade them very finely. A collection built from both periods therefore looks like two different aircraft, even though it is the same airframe.
The base must be smooth and completely cured, otherwise paint runs under. Spray a light insignia onto darker camouflage over a thin covering coat; a saturated area is reached by three light passes rather than by one dense one. Wipe thinner residue away only after lifting the shape off the surface. It also pays to proceed insignia by insignia and not to try to manage the whole side of the fuselage at once.
