An injection-molded plastic model of the American carrier-borne night fighter Douglas F3D-2 Skyknight in 1:72 scale from the Sword brand. It is a typical short-run kit, to which Sword often adds small resin parts and masking films; the exact contents depend on the particular box. Decals for the markings of the naval squadron VF-11 and the Marine night squadron VMF(N)-513 are included. Glue and paints are needed for the build.
The F3D Skyknight was a twin-engine carrier-borne night fighter with a straight wing and a crew of two sitting side by side in the cockpit. It carried a radar in the fuselage for night and all-weather combat. During the Korean War it made its name as a successful night fighter; both naval and Marine Corps units flew it (VMF(N)-513, the Flying Nightmares). A rugged and reliable machine, it was among the pioneers of jet night fighting.
Short-run kits call for a little more experience: reckon with dry-fitting the parts, cleaning up flash and filling the joints if needed. Glue the plastic with modeling cement for plastic, and first wash any resin parts to remove the mold release agent and bond them with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Lay a primer before painting and spray with an airbrush in thin layers; dark night schemes reward light shading and emphasis on the detail.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
