Omask Landing Gear Bay Plugs — F6F Hellcat 1:72 (for the Eduard Kit)

Shaped inserts made of flexible foam from the Czech brand Omask, which are inserted into the model's landing gear bays before painting and reliably close them off. Paint therefore cannot get inside, and after spraying you simply remove the insert. The set is shaped for the Eduard F6F Hellcat kit in 1:72 scale. This is not a model — no kit or plastic parts are included in the package.

Why Use the Plugs

A landing gear bay tends to be deep, intricate, and a different shade on the inside than the aircraft's outer skin. Once paint gets in there during spraying, fixing it is essentially impossible — access inside is poor. Classic tape masking takes long minutes on such an irregular opening and still is not usually airtight. A foam plug cuts the whole step down to a few seconds.

Use

• First finish and let the paint inside the bay dry.
• Insert the plug into the opening so it fills the whole volume of the bay.
• Spray the primer, camouflage and varnishes — the foam will not let paint through.
• Once dry, remove the plug and the bay is clean.

The real subject

The Grumman F6F Hellcat was an American carrier-based fighter of the Second World War, deployed mainly in the Pacific. It was developed as a direct answer to the Japanese Zero and achieved a markedly favorable kill ratio against it and other Japanese aircraft. Rugged, well-armored and with heavy firepower, it became one of the key fighters of the US Navy. Its landing gear retracted into the wings, and the bays are among the spots that need watching during painting.
