This kit from the Polish manufacturer Arma Hobby depicts the FM-2 Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:72 scale. It is an injection-molded plastic model supplied unassembled and unpainted. This item is the basic release of the type; the manufacturer also offers further boxings of the same aircraft with different contents and markings, which are listed separately. The contents of the box, that is the number of sprues, the presence of photo-etch or masks and the number of schemes on the decal sheet, are given in the instructions enclosed with the kit.
The FM-2 was a late version of the Wildcat in its development, built by a licensed partner of the original designer. It came about from a requirement for a machine able to operate from small escort carriers, where a short takeoff and low weight mattered. It therefore received a lightened structure, a more powerful single-row radial engine and a markedly taller vertical tail, which compensated for the greater torque. It is precisely the taller vertical tail that is the most easily recognized external feature distinguishing the FM-2 from the earlier Wildcats.
Arma Hobby has a reputation in 1:72 scale for fine tooling with thin trailing edges, so the model takes a detailed treatment even without accessories. Paint the cockpit and pick it out before closing the fuselage; on a Wildcat a great deal shows under an open canopy. The fuselage is short and stocky, so watch the symmetrical seating of the wing and the fit of the engine section, or the forward part will look visually twisted. Spray a gloss varnish before the decals to prevent silvering, and at the end even the surface out with a matte or satin varnish. Keep the weathering restrained; in a small scale it is enough to suggest a worn walkway at the wing root and fine exhaust stains.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
