About product

1:72 Fokker D.XXI Finnish late canopy airbrush mask - a masking set from MH models

A masking set from MH models intended for models of the later Finnish Fokker D.XXI machines in 1:72 scale. The masks are stuck onto the clear part of the cockpit, which is sprayed over with the color of the frames, and the masks are taken off afterwards. The frames come out exactly along the engraved lines and with no paint running onto the glazing. It is not a kit but an accessory to a model.

The real subject

The Fokker D.XXI was a Dutch single-seat high-wing fighter with a fixed landing gear, which was built under license in Finland and served there longer than in its country of origin. The later Finnish series differed from the original machines in the engine, in the shape of the nose that went with it and in details of the cockpit canopy. The design stayed simple and tough, with an emphasis on operation from improvised airfields and on easy repair under field conditions. It is exactly the different division of the glazing that is the reason why the manufacturer offers a separate mask for the early and for the later form.

Use and masking tips

First compare the shape of the pieces with the clear part of the kit - the set is tied to the later form of canopy. Lift the pieces out of the sheet one at a time with the tip of a scalpel, offer them up to the glazing and press them into the engraved edges all round, so that no air is left under the edge. Fill the inside of the cockpit with a damp tissue and cover the adjacent areas with masking tape. Spray in two steps, the shade of the interior of the frames first and the external finish once that is dry, both in thin coats. Take the masks off with tweezers soon after the paint has dried, pulling at a slight angle.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of fighters of the Second World War in 1:72
  • Modelers building the later Finnish machines of the D.XXI type
  • Those who want sharp cockpit frames without outlining by hand
  • Airbrush users

This is not a model of the aircraft and not a kit. Paints, varnish and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, it is only a masking set for the cockpit glazing. A Fokker D.XXI model in 1:72 has to be bought separately.

For the later Finnish machines. For the Dutch and early Finnish form the manufacturer offers a separate set, because the division of the canopy differs.

Press the edge of the piece into the engraved edge all round and spray several thin coats perpendicular to the surface, never one heavy one.

Shortly after the paint has dried, with tweezers and at a slight angle. Once the finish has fully cured, score the outline with the tip of a scalpel first.
