About product

GBU-31(V)3/B JDAM guided bomb in 1:72 scale

A resin casting of a guided aerial bomb from the JDAM family in 1:72 scale, intended as underwing armament for models of combat aircraft. It is in a small scale that resin makes the most sense: the parts are tiny, and the crispness of the edges on the tail section or the thinness of the strakes decides whether the store looks like a weapon or like a piece of cylinder. Eduard is a Czech manufacturer from Obrnice near Most. The aircraft model is not included in the package.

The real subject

JDAM is an American kit that turns an ordinary unguided aerial bomb into a guided one. A tail section with control surfaces and an inertial unit supplemented by satellite guidance is fitted to the bomb body, and strakes are fitted to the sides. The bomb has no propulsion of its own and glides to the target. The GBU-31 designation belongs to the variants built on the heaviest of the common bombs of this class; the (V)3/B version is the one used by the US Air Force.

Usage and painting tips

The first step with any resin casting is a bath. Mold release agent, used to treat the mold before casting, stays on the surface and is greasy enough that neither paint nor primer will hold on it; it shows only once dry, when the finish can be pulled off with a fingernail. Wash the parts in warm soapy water with a soft brush and let them air dry, and never wipe them with a cloth that will leave fibers. Only then cut the casting blocks with a saw and clean them up. In 1:72 scale it pays to keep the part on the remains of the block as long as possible, so that there is something to hold. The tail surfaces are thin and break easily, so handle them with smooth-jawed tweezers. When hanging them, make sure the control surfaces are turned the same way on both bombs. The paintwork tends to be simple; what decides the result is a clean gloss base under the technical stencils and a final matte coat.

Who the set is for

  • builders of models of modern combat aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want accurate underwing armament instead of simplified plastic parts
  • more experienced builders who do not mind working with small resin parts
  • anyone interested in contemporary air-launched guided weapons

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check that the set matches your kit before ordering.

FAQ

A kit of control surfaces and a navigation unit that is fitted to an ordinary unguided aerial bomb and turns it into a guided one. The bomb has no propulsion of its own.

Mold release agent from the mold clings to the surface. Paint will not hold on it and can be pulled off with a fingernail once dry.

If you are planning a symmetrical load, check the contents before ordering.

More for the experienced. The parts in 1:72 scale are small, the thin tail surfaces break easily and they are bonded with super glue.
