About product

General Aviation Ga-43 Clark in Western Air Express colors, 1:72

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale brings a rarely covered American airliner of the early 1930s, this time in a boxing tied to service with the American carrier Western Air Express. The difference against the sister releases of the same type lies chiefly in the color scheme and the markings; the airframe itself stays the same. It is short-run production - the parts have more pronounced sprue stubs and it is worth trying the mating surfaces dry before gluing. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of schemes are given in the instructions supplied with the kit.

The real subject

The General Aviation Ga-43, also designated after its designer as the Clark Ga-43, was a single-engine all-metal low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear and an enclosed cabin for fewer than ten passengers. It represents the generation in which American airliners were moving to cantilever metal structures with aerodynamically clean shapes. Only a very small number were built, and they passed between several operators; one of the first users of the type was precisely the American carrier whose colors this boxing is aimed at.

Building and painting tips

Proceed as with other short-run kits: try every part dry first, sand the mating surfaces as needed and fill the seams. Choose a thin plastic cement and run it into the seam by capillary action. Apply a primer before painting, which will even out the surface and show up any remaining scratches. An all-metal airframe tempts you toward metallic shades, but those pick out every insufficiently sanded area without mercy, so set aside time for preparing the surface. Apply the decals onto a gloss clear coat, settle them with a decal softener and finish the surface with an overcoat suited to the character of the scheme. The cabin glazing is best masked and sprayed rather than brush-painted.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in American civil airliners of the 1930s
  • Modelers who collect atypical and rarely covered subjects in 1:72 scale
  • Builders with experience of short-run kits
  • Those who want an aircraft with a distinct period line in the display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Chiefly in the color scheme and the markings. This boxing is tied to the American carrier Western Air Express, while the sister releases capture other operators.

The exact number of parts is given in the instructions supplied with the kit. It is an injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale.

It is a short-run kit, so count on trying the parts dry, sanding and filling the seams. It is not an ideal first model for a complete beginner.

Glue the clear parts in, mask the frames with tape and spray them together with the rest of the airframe. Brush-painting by hand will leave visible strokes.
