The 1:72 German Mountain Troops figures relate to mountain formations, that is to the units known as Gebirgsjäger. They set themselves apart from ordinary infantry not only by their kit but above all by the setting they operated in.
Service in the mountains called for equipment of its own: lower pouches, a rope, an ice axe, hobnailed boots with a stiff sole and a soft peaked field cap, which was worn more comfortably under a hood than a helmet. Units of this type moved through very different regions, from the northern plains through the Carpathian and Balkan ridges to the Alpine belt. For a diorama that is interesting, because mountain terrain allows work with a difference in height that a flat scene lacks.
It pays to build a base with a rise and to set the figures into it at different levels; the composition gains depth at once. In color, keep the clothing in gray-green with a warmer cast on the worn areas, while for the kit choose the lighter natural tones of rope and canvas instead. Make the boots and the lower part of the trouser legs markedly darker and lightly rubbed; that is exactly where strenuous movement over stone shows. Finish the rock ground in a cool gray; the contrast with the figures will then stand out.
Plan the slope of the base before seating the figures; the angle of the legs is very hard to adjust afterwards.
