The real subject

Thanks to being undemanding, the domestic goat is common from mountain areas to the southern countryside, so it suits a very wide spectrum of scenes and periods. On a diorama it proves itself as a detail that comes across unexpectedly — unlike cows or horses it appears only rarely, and the viewer therefore notices it. The horns and the slender legs are very fine in 1:72 scale, so handle the figure carefully.

Building and painting tips

Cut the figures from the casting block or the supports with a sharp cutter and sand the traces. Before painting, wash them in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry. Apply a very thin base coat. Build the coat from a darker tone to a lighter one: the base shade, a brown wash in the recesses and a fine dry brush on the back and the flanks. Goats tend to have markedly contrasting markings, so you can allow yourself a darker head or a stripe along the back — choose the particular coloring according to your own idea. Darken the horns and the hooves and finish the paintwork of the figure with a matte clear coat.
