An injected plastic kit of the twin-engine Grumman F-14A carrier fighter aircraft in the equipment of the US Navy fighter squadron VF-41. The 1:72 scale means a model that fits into an ordinary display case even with the wing spread, while still carrying a decent amount of detail. Great Wall Hobby is one of the newer brands with an emphasis on fine engraved lines and an accurate fit of the parts, so the build is more demanding on care than on effort.
The F-14 was a two-seat carrier fighter aircraft with a crew of a pilot and a weapon systems officer. Its characteristic feature is the variable-geometry wing, which sets itself automatically in flight according to the speed: spread for takeoff and landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier, swept for fast flight. The F-14A version was the first production variant of the type and served with the squadrons of the US Navy as a fighter and escort aircraft with long range. VF-41 was one of the squadrons that operated the type.
Build the model in a logical order: first the cockpit and the nose landing gear, then the closing of the fuselage. With types that have a variable-geometry wing, decide in advance in which position you will fix the wing; a movable mounting tends to be the weak point of a finished model. Glue with a thin cement for plastic and sand the joints of the fuselage over carefully, as this shape has a lot of seams. Apply a primer before painting, which will reveal the scratches left by sanding. The gray schemes of naval aviation call for fine grading of the shades, otherwise the model looks flat. Apply the decals onto a gloss clear coat and finish with a matte or semi-matte overcoat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
