A set of 3D-printed parts from Eduard for the model of the Grumman F4F Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:72 scale. It replaces the plastic main landing gear wheels in the late version, rims included. It is not an airplane model but a set of replacement parts for a plastic kit bought separately.
Wheels are among the parts where the difference between plastic and a printed replacement shows at once. A plastic wheel is split and a parting line runs across the middle of the tire, which has to be sanded away and the lost tread pattern restored afterwards. A printed part has no parting line, keeps the sharp detail of the rim and of the sidewall, and in the small 1:72 scale that tells especially, because every simplification is noticed there.
The Wildcat changed during production and its wheels appeared in several guises. The late type designation is therefore not cosmetic: the set matches one particular version and need not suit a model of an early machine. Before ordering, then, check which version you are building.
A Zoom set is a smaller, pre-painted selection from the full photo-etched set; a full photo-etched set is more extensive; masks are self-adhesive templates for the glazing and the wheels; bundle sets bring several sets together in one package; decal sets hold markings only. This item is a set of printed landing gear parts, not photo-etched metal and not a mask.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry. Separate them from the supports with a sharp scalpel and sand the small remains away with fine paper, protecting your airways. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the tire in a dark gray rather than black, because pure black swallows the detail in a small scale. The rim is rewarding to mask with a circular mask, or to paint first and then finish the tire with a brush.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
