This item is a masking set, not an aircraft kit - a plastic model of the same name from a different maker also exists, so the two are easy to confuse. The set holds pre-cut masks of self-adhesive paper tape, which are stuck onto the glazing and other places on the model before spraying. The tape conforms well to curves, holds on the edge of the frame and, once peeled off, leaves no adhesive residue on the clear part. That does away with the long-winded cutting of strips and with the risk of paint running under a mask that is not stuck down accurately. The set is intended for 1:72 scale and for the OV-1A and JOV-1A versions; the particular extent and the number of masks are stated on the box.
The Grumman OV-1 Mohawk is a twin-engine turboprop observation aircraft with a triple vertical tail. What is characteristic is the deeply glazed front part of the cabin with hinged side panels, which gives the crew a view downward along the sides of the fuselage. The OV-1A version was the first production variant, while the JOV-1A was a modification meant for extended test and evaluation duties. It is exactly the extensive glazing with its many frames that makes masking one of the most laborious parts of building this type, so a ready-made set of masks saves considerable time.
Wash the clear parts before masking in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry, so that the tape adheres well. Lift the masks off the sheet with fine-pointed tweezers and press them down with a toothpick or a soft stick, especially in the corners. Spray the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat builds a ridge on the edge that looks untidy once the tape is peeled off. Remove the mask while the paint is tacky to freshly dry, and pull it back over itself at a shallow angle rather than straight up. If you clear-coat the model, count on polishing the edge afterward with a very fine sponge after unmasking.
