In this set Aires brings together two upgrades that go well together: weighted wheels with a realistically compressed tire and landing gear legs made of metal. Unlike plastic ones, metal struts do not bend over time, and the hefty Avenger will stand firmly on them even after years in a display case. Even in the smaller 1:72 scale this is an area that is constantly in view when you look at a model standing on its gear. The set is a replacement for kit parts, not a complete model.
The Grumman Avenger was the standard carrier-based torpedo and bomber aircraft of the US Navy in the Second World War. The TBM designation belonged to machines built under license by the plants of the General Motors car company, which took over a substantial part of production. The rugged machine with its internal bomb bay and folding wings operated from carriers in the Pacific and over the Atlantic on submarine hunts.
Join the metal legs to the airframe with super glue or a two-part adhesive only, and let the joint cure properly. Rinse the wheels before painting, and if necessary drill the fine pin sockets out to a snug diameter. Aim the flat of the tires at right angles to the ground and check the shades of the landing gear bays against photographs of the particular machine.
