A guard tower is a rarer type of item in a diorama, because it works with the vertical dimension. Black Dog offers it as part of a baseplate in 1:72 scale. Whereas most displays spread out across an area, here the composition is built upward and the viewer follows the events from the bottom up.
A tall item draws the gaze at once, so handle it sparingly. Place the tower off center and leave a free area in front of it, so that the gaze has somewhere to run. A small figure at the foot of the structure will convey the size of the whole immediately, which with a model displayed on its own tends not to be obvious. Look over the finished arrangement from the level of the tabletop; it is from exactly such a view that a visitor to a show will see the display.
A tower usually combines several kinds of surface, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. Where you come across wood, build on a brown base and brighten the area with a dry brush; darken the metal parts instead and draw their edges out with a metallic shade. Treat the upper part of the structure lighter than the lower one, as the top gets more light and the whole gains depth through it.
You get the tower bare; you mix the paint coat, the wood tones and the fading according to your own intention.
