A small accessory for figures in 1:72 scale, not a figure on its own and not a kit of a model. The set offers civilian headgear, among it the hard round hat called a bowler. It serves to let a modeler add civilian figures to a scene where otherwise only figures in uniform would stand.
A civilian hat is the simplest way to anchor a scene in time. A bowler hat refers to the townspeople's setting of the end of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, while a soft hat with a wider brim refers to the countryside and to the interwar city. In a diorama this detail tells at once: a group of figures in hats reads as civilians, even when the figures are neutral in the rest of the body. The accessory finds its use most often in railway station and city scenes, in scenes with period vehicles and in a rear area behind the front.
If the figure carries headgear of its own, cut it away with a scalpel and level the crown of the head with a file, so that the hat seats with no gap. Try the part dry and watch the rotation and the tilt, because the set of a hat gives a figure character far more than that of a helmet. It is glued with super glue; even the seam around it out with a thin strip of two-part filler. Spray the whole with a base coat before painting. With civilian hats it pays off to reach for subdued shades of brown, gray and black and to vary them between the individual figures, so that the scene does not come across as uniform. Suggest the band above the brim with a thin line of a darker tone, and lighten the edge of the brim with a very fine dry brush.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the figure itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
