The Hermes A-1 in 1:72 scale is a kit of the American experimental rocket from the Czech maker Brengun, meant for assembling and painting.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit from the Czech maker Brengun works up one of the first American rocket vehicles of the postwar era. 1:72 scale is practical for rockets: the model stays manageable for a display case and at the same time can be stood beside aircraft of the same scale, so that it stands out how unusual such a machine looks among them. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Hermes program was launched by the American army shortly after the Second World War, and its technical contractor was the General Electric company. The aim was not combat service straight away but the mastery of guided rocket technology: propulsion, stabilization and guidance. The A-1 version grew in its design out of the German Wasserfall guided antiaircraft missile and served as a flying testbed on which the behavior of the structure in flight was verified. The tests ran at the White Sands range in New Mexico at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s. The practical significance of the program was that the American teams moved on from studying captured equipment to development of their own, out of which the later army rocket technology grew.
The model has a simple shape, and that is exactly why it forgives nothing. A continuous cylindrical surface will expose every unevenness, so the main work lies in filling and sanding the longitudinal seam over and in the subsequent check of the surface under the primer; ideally spray the primer twice and polish the area over with fine abrasive paper between the coats. Glue the stabilizing fins on only after the surface is finished and watch that they are in the same plane, or the model will optically fall to one side in its stand. Test rockets of the period often carried a contrasting finish that made it easier for observers to follow the rotation in flight, so it pays to prepare exact masking and to apply the paints with an airbrush in thin coats. The small lettering and markings belong only onto a smooth, slightly glossy ground.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
