A set of foot figures in 1:72 scale devoted to the Scottish Highland regiments of the Napoleonic period. The soldiers stand in the drill position of shoulder arms, that is, in the position a unit took up at a muster and at a parade. It is made by the firm Strelets; the castings are of soft plastic of a uniform color and are supplied unpainted and unassembled. The set complements the pose lines of the same unit, so a whole aligned formation can be put together from it.
The close formation of the Napoleonic time stood or fell with drill. The commands for handling a weapon were practiced to the point of reflex, because in the noise and smoke of a battlefield nothing else could be relied on. The shoulder arms position was among the basic ones and is at the same time the best choice for a model formation, where the soldiers stand in exact ranks and a uniform stance holds the whole unit together optically.
This set has one great advantage over poses in movement: all the figures are the same, so they can be painted in a batch and quickly. Set up a procedure and run it through at once for the whole set, that is, washing with detergent, primer, the base of the kilt, the red coat in thin layers, the white crossbelts as a thin line, the cap and finally the faces. You will manage a simplified tartan with a dark base and a grid of thin lines; nobody reads a faithful pattern in 1:72 scale anyway. So that the formation does not look like the imprint of one figure, detune the shades of the kilts slightly and leave some boots and coat hems dusty. Once glued, check the muskets on the shoulders from the side, because tilted barrels in a rank draw attention at once. Fix the finished figures with matte clear.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
