This resin set from Quickboost, a brand of the Czech maker Aires, brings faithfully cast exhaust stubs for a model of the Soviet Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik ground-attack aircraft in 1:72 scale. It is not an airplane model but a detail accessory for more experienced modelers, replacing the solid plastic exhausts with a casting with suggested or drilled-out openings. The sides of the engine cowling thus look more realistic and take exhaust staining more easily.

The real subject

The Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik was a Soviet single-engine ground-attack aircraft, one of the most-produced combat machines of the Second World War. It was powered by a V12 engine and its key feature was the armored fuselage protecting the pilot, the engine and the tanks. In great numbers it supported the ground units of the Red Army against vehicles and infantry alike.

Tips for working with resin

First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water to remove mold release residue. Cut off the casting blocks with a saw and sand the cut surfaces with respiratory protection. Bond the parts with super glue (cyanoacrylate), not with plastic cement. Test the fit dry before painting, as resin may need a little cleaning up.
