Masks for spraying an optical illusion on the control surfaces and ailerons of a model of the Japanese Ki-43-II Hayabusa fighter in 1:72 scale, for the Special Hobby kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
The control surfaces and ailerons of wartime aircraft used to be covered with fabric stretched over the ribs of the structure. The fabric sagged slightly between the ribs and a regular alternation of light and shadow thus arose on the surface. In 1:72 scale such a relief is so fine that it practically cannot be engraved on a model, but it can be painted. That is precisely what this set serves for: the masks define the strips, a tone a shade darker is sprayed over them and once they are taken off a convincing impression of sagging covering is left on a smooth surface.
The set is prepared for a model of the Ki-43-II Hayabusa, a Japanese army fighter famous for lightness and agility, known among the Allies under the nickname Oscar. According to the name it is cut for the Special Hobby kits in 1:72 scale, so the shapes of the masks match the control surfaces of those models.
Apply the masks to a dried and matured base finish, never to fresh paint. Mix a shade only slightly darker than the base; too great a difference turns the aircraft into a striped animal. Spray at low pressure, in several very thin coats and rather from a greater distance, so that the transitions stay soft. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried. At the end, unify the whole with a clear coat, which softens the effect and at the same time hides any sharp edges.
For modelers who build Japanese fighters in a small scale and want to move the surface of a model closer to reality without engraving and filling. The kit, paints and thinner are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
