The Dead Design set is intended for the form of the national insignia without a white ring, that is for the red disc alone. It is the simpler variant of the pair the manufacturer offers for this type, and the difference between them matters when choosing. It is based on the dimensions of the Hasegawa or Special Hobby kits.
Japanese machines carried their national insignia in both forms and the decision follows from the particular aircraft you are building. The most reliable guide is the color scheme supplied with the kit or a period photograph of the machine. If you are not sure, compare the insignia on the upper and lower surfaces of the wing, because on some machines they differed. The set without an outline is the logical choice where the disc is laid directly onto the camouflage with no border of any kind.
Without the white ring, the second mask and the wait for the first coat to cure both fall away. Even so we recommend laying a covering white under the red, because the white will not be seen under the disc and the shade stays deep on dark camouflage. Spray in thin coats perpendicular to the surface, lift the mask off as soon as possible after the paint has set and check the edge against the light. Any small imperfections can be touched up with a brush while the model has not yet been varnished.
