About product

Korean heavy cavalry of the 16th and 17th century, set 1, 1:72, Red Box

The set of figures in 1:72 scale captures armored riders of the Korean peninsula from the period of the 16th and 17th centuries. These are unglued and unpainted figures that a modeler assembles and paints himself. The designation set 1 means that the maker divided the theme into several separate packages; each of them is sold separately and they can be combined.

The real subject

Heavy cavalry in the Korean armies of this period was cavalry in protective armor, that is with the torso and as a rule the head covered. The typical armament was polearms, a bow with a quiver and a melee weapon carried at the waist. The construction of the armor followed from overlapping lamellae or from plates sewn into a cloth backing, which shows on the figures as a regular structure of the surface. The horse's harness is articulated and at 1:72 scale it makes up a pronounced detail.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry out completely; residues of mold release agent are the most frequent cause of paint peeling. If the plastic is soft and flexible, use a flexible undercoat applied in a thin layer, otherwise the paint cracks at the bends. Paint the rider and the horse separately while the inner surfaces of the saddle and the legs are still accessible. Lamellar armor stands out with a dark flowing wash and subsequent drybrushing along the edges; set the harness and the straps apart in a more saturated shade than the horse's body. Finally unify the surface with a matte varnish and seat the figures on a base.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build historical scenes in 1:72 scale
  • Collectors of figures from the early modern period
  • Wargamers looking for mounted units in smaller scales
  • More experienced figure painters who want to work on articulated armor

The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
