About product

The Lebedenko, the Russian Tsar Tank 1:72 (Zebrano)

A resin kit of one of the most bizarre vehicles in the history of technology, in 1:72 scale. The box holds resin castings completed by photo-etched and metal parts. The build is meant for experienced modelers, partly because of the material and partly because of the shape of the subject, which is dominated by two enormous wheels with thin spokes. The result, however, is impossible to overlook in a display case, because it resembles nothing else.

The real subject

The machine designed by the engineer Nikolai Lebedenko was built in 1915 as an attempt at a breakthrough vehicle able to cross trenches. The design grew out of an oversized gun carriage: two front wheels around nine meters in diameter, a smaller support roller at the rear and, between them, a truss structure with the fighting compartment. Each front wheel was driven by an engine of its own. The trials showed that the rear roller sank into soft ground, the machine became stuck and the project ended with the single prototype, which stayed at the test site until it was scrapped in the 1920s.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and protect your breathing when sanding. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). The geometry is what matters: both large wheels have to be upright and in line, otherwise the model stands crooked. Assemble it dry first, check it against a plumb line and glue it on a flat surface. After the primer, choose earthy shades rather than anything else and do not overdo the weathering, as the prototype was practically never used. Distinguish the wooden and steel parts by a satin and a matte surface.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of curiosities and experimental equipment
  • Experienced modelers working with resin and photo-etched parts
  • Anyone interested in First World War equipment
  • Builders looking for a model with an unmistakable silhouette

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a resin kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, a single prototype was built in 1915. During trials it became stuck in the field and the work was taken no further.

Of resin, completed by photo-etched and metal parts. It is not injection plastic.

Keeping both large wheels upright and in line. It pays to assemble it dry on a flat surface.

Earthy shades and restrained weathering. The prototype was never used in combat, so heavy wear would make no sense.
