A set of masks for spraying the national insignia of the British Lightning interceptor in the F.1, F.2 and F.6 versions in 1:72 scale. Prepared for the Airfix and Trumpeter kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lightning was a British supersonic interceptor that entered service at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s and stayed with the Royal Air Force into the 1980s. It became famous for its steep climb, because its task was to get to altitude as quickly as possible to a target heading for the British Isles. The F.1 version is among the earliest production machines, the F.2 is its improvement and the F.6 a late variant with a greater fuel supply. The national insignia are part of what places a model at first glance, and it is precisely how they are executed that is most visible on a finished build.
The masks define the area of an insignia and the paint is laid on by spraying, so no edge of decal film and no glossy patch under it are left on the surface. You choose the shade yourself, which is useful when you want to wipe the insignia down a little into the weathering or to match them to the tone of the camouflage.
Apply a mask only to a matured and dried finish, never to fresh paint. Free the surface of dust and grease beforehand. Press the edges of the mask down with a toothpick so that paint does not run under them, and spray in several thin coats; a heavy coat gets under an edge more easily than a thin one. Lay a multicolored insignia on coat by coat and let each one set. Take the mask off with tweezers shortly after the paint has dried, while the edge is sharp.
For modelers who build British fighters in 1:72 scale and want the insignia sprayed, whether on matte camouflage or on a glossy metal surface, where a decal film is the most noticeable. The kit, paints and thinner are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
