An air intake for the Macchi Mc.202, 1:72 scale, made by Aires/Quickboost. A replacement for the intake above the engine cowling of the Italian fighter.
Responsibility details are not available.
On the Italian Macchi Mc.202 fighter the air intake is a hallmark of the forward fuselage. In injection molding, though, it comes out as a closed block with the opening merely suggested, because a genuinely open duct could only be done by a complicated breakdown of the parts. This accessory from Aires/Quickboost replaces that part with a version that has an open mouth and is fitted into a model you obtain separately.
The Macchi Mc.202 was the most successful Italian fighter of the Second World War. It came about by joining the proven airframe of the previous radial-engine type with the liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz DB 601, which was built in Italy under license as the Alfa Romeo RA.1000 RC.41. The change of powerplant transformed the whole nose: the slim recowled front end with the intake on top gave the aircraft a new silhouette and markedly improved its speed and rate of climb. The machines fought over the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Eastern Front.
Cut the original part out of the box with a fine-toothed saw and level the area with abrasive paper on a block, so that the new piece sits with no gap. Darken the inside of the mouth before gluing it on, because afterward you will not get inside. Make the joint with super glue and fill the transition only where it is really needed - the Italian mottled camouflage does not forgive unevenness.
