An injection-molded plastic kit of the German superheavy tank Panzer VIII Maus in 1:72 scale from the maker Zvezda. It is a modern tooling conceived as snap-fit: the parts fit into one another even without glue, so the kit suits beginners and a quick build for a collection alike.
The Maus was a German superheavy tank developed between 1943 and 1944 as a breakthrough armored vehicle. With a combat weight of around 188 tons it was the heaviest tank ever built; it carried massive armor up to around 200 mm thick and a turret with a large-caliber gun supplemented by a coaxial gun of a smaller caliber. Because of its enormous weight it had trouble with its drivetrain and with the load-bearing capacity of bridges, so fording watercourses was also counted on. It never reached series production: only prototypes were made, and the Maus thus remained more of a demonstration of the limits to which wartime tank engineering could be pushed.
Snap-fit parts can be put together dry, but for lasting strength it is better to tack them in place with glue. In the small 1:72 scale the model is served by thin coats of paint from an airbrush. Spray a thin primer before painting; for late-war German equipment a three-color camouflage suits it (dunkelgelb, green, brown). A fine patina is created with a weak wash into the engraved lines, a dry brush brings out the edges and pigments suggest dust and mud in the running gear, always soberly in a small scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
