Photo-etched add-on set for a model of the F/A-18 Hornet in 1:72 scale. Thin metal parts replace shapes that injection-molded plastic cannot manage in this scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is an American carrier aircraft that handles both fighter and attack duties. It is built for operations from the deck of an aircraft carrier, which is reflected in its rugged landing gear, its arrestor hook and its folding wing. Also characteristic are the leading-edge extensions at the wing root, which keep the aircraft controllable at high angles of attack.
Photo-etched metal is as thin as real sheet, so grilles, covers, levers and other small elements look as slender as they do on the real thing. An injection mold cannot manage that; the parts that come out of it are thicker and have softer edges. In 1:72 scale the difference shows particularly well, because every unnecessary tenth of a millimeter tells here. Exactly what the set holds and where the individual parts belong is shown in the instructions supplied by the manufacturer.
Thin tabs hold the parts in the fret. Separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface rather than by twisting, and sand the remains of the tab away. Make the folds over a straight edge or shape them with flat tweezers, and on larger parts a bending tool helps. Degrease the surfaces before gluing and apply the cyanoacrylate a drop at a time. Think the order through: anything that belongs inside the fuselage or in the cockpit has to be fitted before the kit parts are closed up.
For modelers who want to push the detail of a Hornet model beyond the level of the kit. The kit, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
