A sheet of water-slide decals in 1:72 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal. It deals with the British version of the Phantom aircraft under the designation FGR.2 and offers the striking all-blue anniversary finish of a machine of No. 19 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. This is not a kit; the decals are intended for completing a model of the Phantom in the matching scale, which you obtain separately.
The Phantom FGR.2 was the British variant of the two-seat multirole aircraft, modified for British service. In the service of the Royal Air Force it filled the role of a strike and reconnaissance machine at first, and later the center of gravity shifted toward the defense of airspace and to readiness patrols. Anniversary and ceremonial finishes were with British squadrons a usual occasion for recalling the jubilee of a unit; such schemes covered the whole airframe and differed conspicuously from the standard gray-green or gray camouflage.
This sheet comes from earlier production, so approach it as older material. First try one small element you do not need: if the film breaks while soaking or will not separate from the backing, go over the whole sheet with a thin layer of clear coat from a spray, which will strengthen the decal. The base on the model has to be smooth and glossy, as on matte paint a whitish haze appears under the film. Cut the decal close to the edge of the printing, soak it briefly in lukewarm water and move it onto a moistened place. Force the seating on rivets and in engraved lines with softener and gentle pressing down with a cotton bud. Let large-area pieces dry out thoroughly, and only then go over to matte or semi-matte clear and to any weathering.
This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The model, paints and decal softener are not included in the package.
