About product

A printed cockpit for the Bf-109G-2 in 1:72 scale

In 1:72 scale the cockpit is small, but all the more it gives away the quality of a build, because everyone looks into it through the clear canopy. The add-on from the Czech manufacturer Eduard replaces the inside of the cockpit of the Messerschmitt Bf-109G-2 version with resin parts from 3D printing. That makes it possible to print fine levers, frames and instruments more sharply than an injection mold can manage in such a small scale. The set is fitted into a plastic model under construction and is not an aircraft model in its own right.

The real subject

The Bf 109G, nicknamed Gustav, was the most numerously built version of the German fighter. It was powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 605A inverted V12 with direct fuel injection, which brought a marked increase in power against the preceding F version. The G-2 version came in in 1942 as the unpressurized variant meant for ordinary combat altitudes and it fought on the Eastern Front, in the Mediterranean and over North Africa. From the later G-4 it differed mainly in radio equipment and in the size of the main wheels, which is why Eduard offers the cockpits of the two versions separately. Anyone building the G-4 should therefore reach for the set meant for it.

Usage tips

Wash the parts with lukewarm water and detergent and let them dry through. Separate them from the support structure in small steps with a sharp cut. Always try the cockpit dry between the fuselage halves and take any overhang off with a thin file, otherwise the fuselage will not close. Fit it with super glue. Painting is easiest before the fuselage is closed; a coat of the base shade, a dark wash into the recesses and fine emphasis of the edges with a dry brush work well. The instruments are brought to life by a drop of gloss varnish, which creates the impression of glass.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Bf 109G-2 in 1:72 scale with an open cockpit
  • Builders who are bothered by the soft detail of plastic parts in a small scale
  • Those interested in German fighter aviation of the Second World War
  • Modelers with resin experience and a taste for fine work

FAQ

A separate set comes out for the G-4. The versions differed above all in radio equipment, which is why Eduard offers them separately.

Before the fuselage is closed. It is advisable to try the seating dry, so that the fuselage halves can be joined without pressure.

The benefit is then smaller. The set makes the most sense on a model with the canopy slid back.

After painting, it is enough to put a drop of gloss varnish into each dial. That creates a lens which resembles the glass of a gauge.
