A self-adhesive masking set from SX-Art for the model of the twin-engine MiG-29 fighter in 1:72 scale. It does not concern the cockpit glazing but exclusively the engine exhaust nozzles. It is neither a kit nor replacement parts but a sheet of pre-cut masks that separate the metal and heat-discolored shades of the nozzles from the color of the airframe.
The rear end of the MiG-29 is awkward to paint: the two nozzles sit fairly close together and only a narrow strip of airframe is left between them, so aiming an airbrush in there freehand is difficult. At the same time these are two different worlds of color. The airframe carries flat camouflage, the nozzles metal and heat-discolored shades that are sprayed separately and are very hard to overspray. A pre-cut mask holds the circular perimeter of the nozzle along its whole length, so no scattered edge of metal and no camouflage creeping in arises at the border. The exact extent of the sheet is not stated here.
First finish the nozzles including the metallic shades and let the varnish cure well, as metallics are delicate to the touch. Then fit the mask onto the finished nozzle and press the edge down all the way round; in the narrow gap between the nozzles a blunt toothpick or stick helps. Spray the airframe color in thin coats and at a right angle, not at an angle into the gap. Take the mask off carefully and rather sooner than later, so that the edge of the metallic varnish does not come away with it.
