Etched parts solve what injected plastic cannot manage in a small scale: the thickness of the material. An instrument panel, cockpit side consoles, grilles, bulkheads or small plates on the skin always come out oversized on plastic in 1:72 scale. This set from the Czech maker Eduard is intended for the model of the MiG-29 in the SMT version and belongs among the fuller etched sets, not among the small Zoom sets.
The designation 9-19 is the factory number of the modernized version of the MiG-29, put on the market as the SMT. Compared with the original machine of the 1980s it received a considerably enlarged fuselage spine with an additional fuel tank, which gives the aircraft its characteristic humpbacked outline, then a reworked cockpit with multifunction displays and a broader ability to strike ground targets. In the armament of the Russian Air Force it serves as a transitional type between the older MiG-29 and the newer versions.
In 1:72 scale you work with genuinely tiny parts, so tweezers with fine tips and good light are a necessity, not a luxury. Degrease the parts before painting, or the metal will not take the paint. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or at least over a blade laid on a hard surface. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with the tip of a wire. Finish the cockpit and the other interior areas before you close up the fuselage; with the external parts, on the other hand, count on fitting them to a finished surface.
