About product

Control Surfaces for the Mosquito B Mk.XVI, 1:72 (CMK)

A resin set of control surfaces for the bomber version of the de Havilland Mosquito B Mk.XVI in 1:72 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft and not a complete interior detail set; it is a narrowly aimed accessory that changes a single thing: the rudder, the ailerons and the elevator come as separate castings instead of as parts molded in one piece with the surface that carries them.

Why deflected surfaces do a model good

An aircraft standing on the ground almost always has its surfaces somewhere other than in the neutral position: the rudder leans on the wind, the elevator droops under its own weight, the ailerons part according to where the control column was left. A model with perfectly symmetrical surfaces therefore looks very static, even when it is otherwise built faultlessly. Deflecting them is at the same time the simplest way to give a model a sense of movement, because it calls for nothing more than thinking about how the aircraft would have stood in a photograph. On a twin-engine aircraft such as the Mosquito the difference is more apparent still, as the surfaces are large and read well even in this scale. The set is cast to the parts of the Airfix kit.

The procedure for the swap

Reckon on this being an irreversible alteration to the plastic parts: the control surfaces have to be cut off the wing and the tail surfaces. Make the cut along the engraved dividing line with a sharp scalpel in several shallow strokes rather than one forceful one, and then level the edge with a file. Separate the resin castings from the casting blocks with a fine saw, sand the mating surface down and wash them in warm water with detergent before painting, because of the mold release agent. They are glued with cyanoacrylate, which leaves only a short while for adjusting the angle, so try the angle dry first. Confirm that the deflection is consistent: the two ailerons cannot be deflected in the same direction.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the Mosquito B Mk.XVI model in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who build an aircraft in a standing pose and want to give it movement
  • those who can cut the surfaces cleanly off plastic parts
  • more experienced modelers working with resin and cyanoacrylate

This is an accessory to a model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The control surfaces have to be cut off the wing and the tail surfaces along the engraved dividing line. It is an irreversible alteration, so reckon on it in advance.

According to the name, for the Airfix kit. With other kits of the same aircraft, reckon on having to adjust the fit.

According to the name these are the control surfaces of the aircraft, that is the rudder and the ailerons. The exact list of parts follows the manufacturer's details.

Go by a period photograph of a standing aircraft. The basic rule is that the ailerons move against each other, one up and one down, and that on the ground the elevator usually droops.
