About product

National insignia masks for the Mosquito PR.XVI in 1:72 scale

The set belongs among painting masks, not among decals. The templates are applied to a painted model and the national insignia are sprayed through them with the same technique and the same paints as the rest of the airframe. The insignia is thus created directly in the paint film and nothing extra is left on the surface. The set is cut for a model in 1:72 scale. The target kit is Airfix.

The real subject

The de Havilland Mosquito PR.XVI was the photo-reconnaissance version of the twin-engine wooden-structure aircraft, adapted for flight at high altitude and without gun armament. Reconnaissance machines differed from the combat versions in the way they were marked as well, so the placement and the size of the insignia on them are worth careful work.

Why a sprayed insignia instead of a decal

A decal lies on top of the paint and its transparent carrier film gives itself away on a matte or rougher surface with a glossy outline, which modelers call silvering. A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, nowhere stands above the surface and takes later weathering with a wash or a dry brush without trouble. The difference shows most on the large roundels on the wing, where a decal has to settle over engraved lines.

How to work with the masks

The insignia are sprayed only onto a dry and smooth surface. Seat the template exactly in position, press the edges down firmly so that the paint cannot creep under them, and spray in several very thin coats. A multicolor insignia is done coat by coat with a short pause for setting. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has dried, pulling it back over itself at a shallow angle.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British Second World War aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who are bothered by silvering decals on a finished model
  • those who weather a model heavily and find that decals do not survive it
  • anyone who wants insignia in the same shade and sheen as the rest of the surface

FAQ

No. These are painting masks. The insignia is sprayed through them with paint you choose yourself, so the result has the same sheen as the surrounding finish.

Silvering arises on the transparent carrier film of a decal, which does not settle fully on a rougher surface. A sprayed insignia has no film at all; it is part of the paint film.

As soon as the paint has dried. Pull it back over itself at a shallow angle so that the edge of the fresh coat is not lifted.

Yes, provided they can work with an airbrush and lay on thin coats. The key is to press the edges of the template down and not to put the paint on all at once.

The target kit is Airfix. The cut and the dimensions are based on it; on another mold the shapes may differ.
