Masks for spraying an optical illusion on the control surfaces of a model of the Japanese N1K1-Ja and N1K1-Jb Shiden fighter in 1:72 scale, for the Aoshima kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
The fabric covering of control surfaces and ailerons sagged slightly between the ribs of the structure, so the area was never perfectly smooth. In large scales that is dealt with by engraving, but in 1:72 scale such an intervention is so fine that it harms more often than it helps. Paint manages the same thing with no risk: the masks define regular strips, a slightly darker tone is sprayed over them and the eye fills the rest in by itself.
The set is prepared for a model of the Shiden, a Japanese land-based fighter of the late war whose design grew out of an earlier floatplane; among the Allies the nickname George took hold for it. The Ja and Jb forms differ in the arrangement of the armament. According to the name the masks are cut for the Aoshima kits in 1:72 scale.
The base must be dried and matured, otherwise it peels off with the mask. Mix a tone only a little darker than the base finish and spray at low pressure, in thin coats, with the gun further from the surface, so that the transitions stay soft. Take the masks off with tweezers soon after the paint has dried. A final clear coat unifies and softens the effect; if the contrast seems too strong after drying, it can be softened further by a fine misting of the base shade from a greater distance.
For modelers of Japanese equipment in 1:72 scale who want a faithful surface with no intervention in the parts. The kit, paints and thinner are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
