Shading masks in 1:72 scale for the Japanese Kawanishi N1K2-J and N1K3-J Shiden KAI fighter. Transitions sprayed through a stencil bring the tail surfaces and the ailerons to life. Intended for the Aoshima kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of stencils for an airbrush for the Kawanishi N1K2-J and N1K3-J Shiden KAI. Shadow transitions laid on through the masks suggest relief where the molding has a smooth surface: on the elevator, the rudder and the ailerons. The plastic is not touched in any way. The target kit is Aoshima.
Experience with the first Shiden led Kawanishi to a thorough revision. The wing moved down, which made it possible to shorten and simplify the landing gear that had been the predecessor's weak point. The fuselage lengthened, the tail surfaces grew in size and the number of production parts fell markedly. The result was an aircraft that in the hands of experienced pilots matched the best Allied machines of the late war, but only a few hundred made it into the fighting. The N1K3-J designation then covered a further development branch of the same concept.
Stencils hold best on a smooth, well cured base, so wait at least a day after laying the base color on. Spray from a greater distance and in thin coats; saturation is reached by repeating passes, not by the amount of paint at once. After peeling the sheet off, check the edge against the light; a single light pass evens out a small irregularity.
